The Walt Disney Company announces an outlay of $4.05 billion for the purchase of the Lucasfilm company, founded by director George Lucas and the creator of franchises like "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones." Disney also reveals that it plans to create a new chapter in the famous galactic saga - "Star Wars: Episode 7" - to premiere in 2015.
A 90-minute NBC-TV special, The Grand Opening of Walt Disney World, shows the park to approximately 52 million people in the U.S. The wonderful world of Disney episode gives a celebrity-filled look at the new resort and includes appearances by Julie Andrews, Glen Campbell, Buddy Hackett, Jonathan Winters, and Bob Hope. The special was filmed during WDW's 3-day grand opening on Oct. 23, 24 & 25. Click the link below to watch the special. Disney/Pixar's newest animated feature film, Monsters, Inc. premieres at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. Stars Billy Crystal, John Goodman, and Mary Gibbs are on hand for the event. (The film will open in U.S. theaters November 2.)
A year before the park was to open, Walt made a deal with the ABC television network that included production of a new weekly anthology series where Walt himself could give updates on his special project. On this date Walt unveiled his plans to a national television audience during the debut episode of this new television show, appropriately titled, “Disneyland.” About 30.8 million American viewers tune into what will be a TV tradition for more than 40 years. First, viewers are given a quick tour of the Walt Disney Studios and then are introduced to Walt Disney's newest venture: a theme park called Disneyland. This episode, directed by Robert Florey, is the public's first real exposure to Disney's plans for a park in Anaheim.
Disney's Cured Duck - featuring Donald Duck and Daisy - is released. Directed by Jack King and written by Roy Williams, Daisy refuses to let Donald leave the house until he learns to control his bad temper! Click the link below to check out the short. The formal dedication of Walt Disney World in Florida, takes place with Walt's brother Roy O. Disney officiating. (The park has been opened since October 1.) Standing alongside Roy O. Disney during the dedication in Town Square is Mickey Mouse (portrayed by Cast Member Doug Parks). A grand opening parade down Main Street USA, featuring a 1,076-piece band and led by Music Man Meredith Wilson (the composer of "76 Trombones") kicks off at 2 p.m. (A 90-minute TV special will air 4 days later.)
The animated series Gargoyles airs for the first time. Created and produced by Greg Weisman, it is hailed as one of the more ambitious Disney animated series in history. Known for its complex and dramatic stories, Gargoyles is targeted at an older demographic.
Disney's newest animated feature film, Dumbo (directed by Ben Sharpsteen) world premieres at the Broadway Theater in New York City. Walt Disney, his wife Lillian, and a handful of his staff are in attendance. The fourth of Walt Disney's animated feature films, it is based upon the storyline written by Helen Aberson and illustrated by Harold Pearl. Ridiculed because of his enormous ears, a young circus elephant is assisted by a mouse to achieve his full potential. The 64-minute film, released by RKO Pictures, will win the Oscar for Best Score for a Musical Film and "Baby Mine" (the song that plays during Dumbo's visit to his mother's cell) will be nominated for Best Song.
At Walt Disney World, the formal grand opening of EPCOT Center begins. To be held over the next three days, the official Future World dedication takes place on this evening with special invited guests surrounding Spaceship Earth. Cast members dressed in tuxedos offer champagne as seven big bands provide entertainment for the elegant occassion. High above the park, the Goodyear Blimp flashes the display: "Saluting Walt Disney World, Epcot Center."
